UK Forecast: Sunny with a chance of Flash Camps

13th March 2010

Flash Camp

We’re really excited to be learning about a wave of Flash Camps taking place in the UK this summer. From what we’ve heard on the rumour mill, there will be camps in London and Birmingham, as there was last year. But this year it seems Manchester is also getting it’s own Flash Camp! Like before, they will be one-day events aimed at giving a taste of what’s been happening in the Flash community, and what’s coming up, with presentations from industry professionals and the Adobe team. With the camps, a Scotch on the Rocks event in London and the infamous Flash on the Beach, 2010 is looking set to be a fantastic year for Flash events. More news to follow...

Open Source Media Framework

10th Sept 2009

Adobe Flash Player 10

Adobe have recently announced a new open source project that seeks to introduce some standards into the development of Flash-based media players. The idea behind OSMF is to reduce the complexity involved in developing media players (particularly video players), and in doing so, lower the barriers-to-entry to allow many more developers to create unique and engaging players. OSMF aggregates fixes for many of the problems that other developers have toiled over, meaning you can build rapidly, safe in knowledge that your output will be stable. As a business, the standardisation of player development means that new developers should be able to join your team with relative ease, and become productive in less time. You can find out more about OSMF here; also don't forget about our new Video & OSMF forum, if you get stuck!

Flash Midlands

24th February 2009

Midlands Flash Platform User Group

The Midlands Flash Platform User Group is pleased to be welcoming Andrew Shorten to their April 4th meet-up in Nottingham. Andrew is a UK-based Flash Platform evangelist for Adobe, and will be presenting to the group for around an hour about the forthcoming Flex Gumbo (Flex 4) release, the new Flash Catalyst tool, and Adobe Flash Collaboration Service (formerly codenamed "Cocomo"). For information about coming along visit their group site.

On March 14th, the group will be receiving a presentation from James Whittaker. James is a front-end technical architect and has worked with various Adobe technologies for over 10 years. He has developed interactive projects for the likes of Egg bank, Prudential and Nokia. He is an Adobe Community Expert and runs RefreshingApps.com, an Adobe AIR showcase and resource site where you can submit your latest creations for review. James presented a session at Adobe Max Europe last year on Perfecting the user experience in Adobe AIR. In his session James will show you how to get started creating AIR applications with Flash CS4; explaining how to create a custom shaped application that doesnt use the operating systems built-in chrome. He will also be looking at how you deploy your new creation to your website for downloading, by harnessing the power of the AIR badge installer.

"Thermo" becomes Flash Catalyst!

17th November 2008

Catalyst

The biggest announcement to come out of this year's conference season is the official unveiling of the "Thermo" product that was previewed to developers a year ago. Touted as the magic bullet that will improve the designer-developer workflow during the creation of Rich Internet Applications, it is aimed at primarily at designers who are struggling to integrate their work into the Flex development process. The product introduces the ability to import interface designs directly from graphics applications like Photoshop, allowing the designer to immediately apply behaviours. Depending on the setup of the team, the designer may just deploy this application, or may pass it on as a 'working prototype' for development teams to enhance and integrate with services etc... A preview copy will be available to download on Labs in the New Year.

Flash Player 10 is the best yet

1st November 2008

Adobe Flash Player 10

The uptake of Flash Player 10 was at over 65 percent before it had even been released, and will almost certainly hit the high nineties within 12 months, but that isn't the reason why it's the most successful player to-date. Flash Player 9 revolutionised the Flash Platform; giving it a faster virtual machine, better video support, and let's not forget ActionScript 3.0! Flash Player 10 takes everything we were given by 9 and multiplies it by 2. Multi-bitrate video which gives you automatic stream-switching, a new File Reference API allowing us access to local files without first having to round-trip to the server, better hardware acceleration giving faster graphics rendering speeds, custom effects and filters, brand-new built-in support for 3D effects, and typed-array support in the form of the Vector class are just the tip of the iceberg. The new Flash runtime has plenty to keep your users engaged, and you busy! Download Flash Player 10 and see what the fuss is about.

Adobe announce CS4

23rd September 2008

Adobe CS4 Master Collection

Dubbed as the "shortcut to brilliant", Adobe Systems Inc. announced the successor to the popular CS3 suite of web and creative production tools - CS4. The key thinking behind this release is essentially shortcuts; less clicks. Beta evaluation copies of Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Soundbooth have been available for some time over on Adobe Labs with links to the features and pre-order pages being sent out to developers around the world on 23rd Sept 08. Trial versions of each of the 13 products that make up the Master Collection are available to download now from the Adobe site.

Get your copy of Flash Player 10 Beta!

02nd August 2008

Astro logo

Flash Player 10 is a reality, and Adobe are making beta builds of the new runtime available on Adobe Labs.

As well as resolving some of the last remaining issues discovered in Player 9, there are also a stack of new features to keep even the most inventive developer busy for some time! We particularly like the new Vector class, but we're also fans of the GPU Compositing and Dynamic Streaming.

Get a copy now, and get playing; but remember: it's only available in English right now, and it's a beta so you might find a few things aren't perfect.

Flex 3 and AIR 1.0 now on full public release

04th March 2008

Flex 3 logo

Adobe announced the launch of Flex Builder 3 and the Flex 3 SDK on 25th February, alongside the much anticipated first full release of their desktop-based AIR framework. Enhancements to the Flex Builder development environment provide better ways to improve the efficiency of applications, through the new profiling tool. The IDE also has much better integration with the Flash CS3 IDE, allowing you to export components for use in your projects in Flex Builder. There's also a wizard to assist developers to import skins created in Flash CS3 into Flex projects, creating a better designer/developer workflow, and making Flex apps even easier to customise Flex 3.

AIR is the leap from the browser onto the user's desktop. No longer are we restricted to clunky executables that have limited scope for distribution over the Internet, and operate in complex application containers. Flash can now exist on the desktop, in a window-less container. Not only can it sync itself with a server when required, but can also store data in its own local database! The file system is accessible too, allowing files to be open, read, modified and saved. All we're waiting for now is the first killer app... Adobe AIR.

Our top 3 texts!

02nd January 2008

After a while reviewing a number of texts available on the market, we strongly recommend every ActionScript developer has these in their collection. Moock's book covers the fundamentals of programming ActionScript 3.0, Lott, Schall and Peters cover some more advanced problem solving in the cookbook. Finally, Sanders and Cumaranatunge complete the trio with a concise and invaluable understanding of the necessary achitecture behind complex applications.

AIR Beta 2 on Labs

9th Oct 2007

Flex 3 logo

Adobe have released the second public beta of the Adobe Integrated Run-time (AIR) over on Adobe Labs for those of you who have already been playing around, and possibly even deploying apps using beta 1, you'll now need to do a little work on your app to allow it to work on the new version of the AIR run-time. Adobe have published a set of migration instructions that guide you through the process. The FlexDeveloper AIR Forum is a great place to get assistance, and also see example applications.
