I went and asked some questions after the subject of server software requirements for HTTP Streaming came up in our last User Group meeting.

First off, you won't need FMS to deliver VOD content, though you will likely need it for streaming live content over HTTP.

From what I've found out from guys on the pre-release, there are key components you'll need (1) the file packager (2) the Apache module.

The file packager will be some kind of command line tool that will package your media in pieces that will allow it to be chunked and cached by servers. It will also create a manifest file (*.f4m) that describes the package contents and will need to reside on the server.

The Apache module will need to be installed on your web server, so if you have hosting where you don't have admin rights over your Apache installation you may need to ask your host to do this for you. Most hosts will do it for nothing, some may charge a nominal fee... If they outright refuse, it's definitely a sign that you should change hosts!

The general musings in the community at the moment are that both the Apache module and the file packager will be free from Adobe, possibly even open-source - though it's still early days and the licensing models aren't clear yet.
